Zart Art - Asian Studies - Linking Language – A cross curricula journey
Linking Art, Language and Library classes to create the beginnnings of an integrated apporach to China was highlighted by Jeanette Jennings. She gave out two handouts on making Chinese lanterns and Building the head of a dragon. See below:

The idea of PLAN, PROCESS,PRODUCT AND PRESENTATION, complemented with REFLECTION were discussed as an excellent overview to transfer ideas into action. Getting students to pick another child's work and explain what they like about it was a great idea about reflection too.
Great sharing of ideas on how to integrate subject areas preceded the opportunity to create a traditional Chinese painting of the '3 friends of Winter' on vylene (dress makers stiffening purchased at any fabric store). Two videos were watched to give the background on the 'three friends of winter' - bamboo, plum blossom and pine - and to watch and listen to Henry Li explain how to create a painting. View them here:

Some great ideas for using apps and ipads were also shared including 'Drawing Pad' which is simple and very effective for drawing and saving multiple versions for all levels from Prep upwards.
'Pablo', google translate, 'Pleco' were all offered as good translators from Chinese to English or vice versa. Chinese writer was recommended as the best app for training how to write CHinese characters and Chinese Pada (there are 12 free versions of increasing complexity) were recommended for learning Chinese as well. You can just reset your keyboard in 'settings' to type in Chinese character straight off your ipad keyboard.
